Lowell extends run to 17 straight

He is a picture of tranquility before and during the match, eyes hidden behind sunglasses and an easy smile on his face.

But Lowell boys’ tennis coach Terence Doherty admits to feeling a little anxiety each year before the San Francisco Section tennis final, no matter how certain it seems the Cardinals’ dynasty will continue.

"I’m always nervous in the few days leading up to it," Doherty said. "The expectations have been the same since I got here [in 2000], to get to this day and to win. And we always have the talent to do it."

Lowell came through again Friday, defeating Washington 6-1 to claim its 17th consecutive section crown. The Cardinals (20-4) have now won 58 titles in 69 years and will begin play in the NorCal tournament after next week’s All-City meet.

"I think people here definitely have high standards," said senior Max Sidorov, Lowell’s No. 2 singles player. "And to keep the tradition going means a lot. When we win as a team, we represent the school well."

Sidorov was one of the first players off the court for the Cardinals after defeating Kevin Chang 6-2, 6-1. No. 3 singles player Alex Le (a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Gustavo Lopez) and No. 4 Frank Lu (who took a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Kasra Shokat) also impressed for Lowell, which dropped just six of 63 individual matches all year. The most competitive singles match came on the first court, as Anthony Bogodist outlasted Benson Chau 6-3, 4-6, 3-1 (retired). Chau had to retire in the third set due to leg cramps.

"The team means a lot, especially on days like this when I’m struggling," Bogodist said. "I wasn’t too confident with how my match would end, but that’s why it’s so great to have all those guys with me."

In doubles, Lowell’s No. 2 team of Brent Lee and Gary Podualny defeated Lenny Berkovitch and David Chiu 6-1, 6-1, while the No. 3 tandem Victor Kai and Truman Lam dropped CalvinHuynh and Albert Chen 6-2, 6-2.

Washington’s Kyle Chow and Billy Chan earned the Eagles’ lone win at No. 1 doubles, defeating Jonathan Louie and Greg Balter 7-6 (4), 7-5.
