Local sheepdog earns 1st place at American Kennel Club contest

A Foster City woman and her Shetland sheepdog took first place in their division at the American Kennel Club National Agility Championship last weekend.

Marcy Mantell guided Wave, a 7-year-old competing in the 12-inch jump-height division. Wave was one of 11 canines crowned champion in the field of nearly 1,000 in the competition at Tulsa, Okla.

The event is meant to display the training and teamwork of a dog and a trainer and is the culmination of a lengthy qualification process.

Agility events demonstrate a dog’s athleticism and versatility by racing against the clock and conquering a challenging course of various obstacles.
