Live-work photo studio for sale

The building at 1417 15th St. occupied by Big House Studio LLC, one of the West Coast’s major photography studios, is up for sale for $3.75 million, giving someone the chance to buy a massive live-work warehouse in The City with a notable history of corporate use.

"It has a 1,400-square-foot seamless cove, which has been used in all types of photography shoots," for products ranging from Williams Sonoma housewares to Lamborghini cars, Zephyr Real Estate agent Mollie Poe said. "It’s also got a fabulous space for entertaining. In the past, corporate events were held there. Honest to god, it’s the hottest converted warehouse space I’ve ever seen."

The price includes everything from the furniture and the artwork to the custom-built facilities software, she added.

Big House principal Altura Ewers purchasedthe building in 2002 from Jock McDonald, the photographer responsible for the noted Baby Gap advertising campaign, among others. While working on his own technology encryption firm, Nava-stream, Ewers decided to create a second business in his home: a fun, multi-use location to appeal to creative advertising types.

"They need a very stimulating, fun location that’s almost surreal," Ewers said. "And that’s what I think we accomplished with the Big House franchise."

He completed a major remodel in 2003 with Takima Design, and went on to create a vibrant space, which has hosted a private performance by Snoop Dogg and an array of prominent photo shoots. He is now divesting the San Francisco building to concentrate on Big House businesses in his native Jamaica and in Brazil, he said.

Big House is also putting together a coffee-table book of candid and planned photographs taken in the studio, Ewers said, and is soliciting shots from photographers. More information is available at

Navastream will retain a sales office and data center elsewhere in The City.
