Likely interim mayor pick still abroad

Don’t expect Ed Lee to be celebrating his possible appointment as interim mayor in The City.

City Administrator Ed Lee may have risen to the top of the proposed candidates for interim mayor, but he won’t be around in San Francisco to hear the news. Lee remains outside of the country and is not expected back in time for the Board of Supervisors 3 p.m. meeting where a vote will take place on whether to appoint Lee as interim mayor.

Lee has had communications with supervisors who asked for a continuance on Tuesday to talk over the appointment. Lee only emerged as a serious contender within about 48 hours of Tuesday’s vote. Supervisor John Avalos says he is still deciding whether he would throw his support behind Lee, who on Tuesday was the only nomination to pick up the six required votes for an appointment.

Despite being out of the country, a statement from Lee was released to the public in a Chinatown event, which included the likes of powerful Rose Pak, who has reportedly taken credit for the Lee appointment.

Lee is said to be returning to The City on Sunday.
