Lights out at landmarks Saturday night

Several major San Francisco landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, are extinguishing their nonessential lights for an hour this weekend to promote energy conservation.

Lights will go out at the Bay Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, City Hall and Alcatraz from 8 to 9 p.m. Saturday as part of San Francisco's first-ever citywide energy saving event, according to local environmentalist organization Lights Out San Francisco.

Roadway lights on the bridges will remain on for safety, a Lights Out San Francisco spokeswoman said.

To promote Saturday's event, city officials and local business leaders planned to meet at the front steps of City Hall on Polk Street at noon today, along with volunteers from Lights Out San Francisco, according to the group.

Lights Out volunteers will be handing out energy-saving light bulbs today at City Hall as well.
