Letters from our Readers: Eastern span should serve as a monument

At a price of a little over a $1 billion — and now a cost of way over $6 billion — and made in China by slave labor, the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge should be scrapped as a historical monument to overzealous politicians, and the existing span rebuilt — or else on the 525-foot tower have placed a brown (Willie and Jerry) pirate flag so that commuters can be reminded of the high tolls being paid on bridges to pay for this unfortunate bridge design.

No, it is not a Giza pyramid that has lasted for tens of centuries through floods, earthquakes and intense storms, but fortunately there is the San Mateo Bridge that is safe, paid for, made in America and not a thorn in the pocketbook of all residents in the greater Bay Area.

As one writer proclaimed, let us hope it is completed before the next big earthquake.

Bottle ban goes to far

Our Board of Stupidvisors is at it again.

First, supervisors ban certain types of take-out containers, then they ban plastic bags. Now, they want to ban water bottles. Is there anything else that supervisors want to do in terms of telling us how we should live?

Perhaps they will next tell us that they’ll ban cars in all of San Francisco? They hate us residents so much they want to punish us left and right for every little thing! We’re nickel-and-dimed to death and we get nothing in return.

Real GOP is dead

People are talking about how the Republicans might do in the elections this November. I say they can’t win because the Republican Party no longer exists. Those who claim to be the Republicans aren’t. The party is dead. Only the name survives.

This is not the party of Abraham Lincoln. Ronald Reagan was far too liberal for today’s Republicans. What is left of the Republicans is the Ku Klux Klan wing, neocons like Dick Cheney and those who are against the kind of people who think.

The party is owned by corporate puppets that apologize to British Petroleum. The party is led by Rush Limbaugh and Sarah Palin. Republicans are only concerned about the deficit when they are out of power and spend like mad when they are in power.

Please get progressive

A definite fall-off of progressive opinion here these last few weeks. Hope this isn’t intentional.

Every conservative newspaper should get “fair and balanced” points for subscribing to Associated coup-in-Honduras Press. Nevertheless, I rather miss the punk-and-spunk of progressive vitriol once so common here — the name calling, the screwy causation, the shameless playing of the compassion card.

More progressive opinion, please.
