An option before building

San Francisco continues to experience a highly visible influx of younger residents, most notably younger tech workers. Why is it that these new residents are so desperate to live in San Francisco that they will endure lengthy round-trip commutes from San Francisco to the southern municipalities where they’re employed?

Might part of the answer be that living in The City enables one to live at least part of one’s life car-free?

If yes, the solution to The City’s current housing crunch may not be to frantically build more housing. A better answer, one more far-sighted and sustainable than overbuilding, may instead be to work much harder to create walkable, bikeable communities on the Peninsula.

The Silicon Valley municipalities where many of San Francisco’s newest residents work need to better respond to the desires of their young workers for a more urban lifestyle.
