Legislation would reduce waste from disposed drugs

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi introduced legislation Tuesday that would not allow any drug company to sell prescription or non-prescription drugs in San Francisco unless the company participates in a drug disposal program that collects and disposes of unwanted drugs.

The company would have to pay for the administrative and operating costs of the program.

The legislation is meant to address the problem of discarded drugs. Wastewater treatment plants cannot treat the drugs that are flushed down toilets and sinks and they end up contaminating the Bay. And drugs that end up in a landfill can leach into the groundwater.
