League playoffs to start 

The playoffs have arrived for a number of The City’s prep basketball teams, with both the West Catholic Athletic League and Bay Counties League West opening their postseason today.

Riordan (23-2, 12-2 WCAL) earned the second seed in the WCAL boys’ bracket and will host No. 7 St. Francis (11-14, 2-12) tonight at 7. The Crusaders’ Robert Jones, a top candidate for the league’s Player of the Year award, averaged 15.4 points and 11.2 rebounds per game this season.

In the other boys’ games involving San Francisco teams, No. 4 St. Ignatius (18-6, 9-5) will host archrival Sacred Heart Cathedral (11-13, 6-8), the No. 5 seed, at 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats swept both games between the teams this season.

In the WCAL girls’ bracket, Sacred Heart Cathedral (22-2, 14-0) earned the No. 1 seed and will host No. 8 Sacred Heart Prep (10-16, 2-12) at 7 p.m. Third-seeded St. Ignatius (18-6, 10-4) hosts No. 6 Notre Dame of Belmont (9-17, 3-11) at 6 p.m.

The Wildcats will host the girls’ semifinals on Thursday and the boys’ semifinals on Friday, with both title games to be played Saturday at Foothill College.

In the BCL West boys’ division, top-seeded Lick-Wilmerding (20-6, 11-1) and No. 2 Stuart Hall (21-5, 9-3) earned byes and await the winners of today’s first-round games. Sixth-seeded Marin Academy (9-16, 2-10) travels to University (20-6, 9-3) and No. 4 Crystal Springs Uplands (14-12, 5-7) hosts No. 5 Drew (13-13, 5-7).

In the BCL West girls’ bracket, top-seeded Urban (23-3, 11-1) and No. 2 Convent (13-11, 9-3) earned byes. In the first round, No. 3 Lick-Wilmerding (17-9, 9-3) hosts No. 6 Crystal Springs Uplands (9-15, 4-8) and No. 4 Marin Academy (11-14, 5-7) hosts No. 5 University (12-13, 4-8).

The International boys and Gateway girls earned the top seeds in the BCL Central playoffs, which tip off Wednesday with a four games beginning at 3:30 p.m. at Kezar Pavilion.

The BCL West and Central titles for both the boys’ and the girls’ will be decided at Kezar Pavilion on Saturday.

The Academic Athletic Association begins its postseason next week.
