Lawmaker critical of pot-smoking immigrants charged with possession of marijuana

Rhode Island House Minority Leader Robert Watson was charged with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia and driving under the influence, after being stopped at a Connecticut police checkpoint. A bag of suspected marijuana and a pipe were found in Watson’s pocket, according to the police report. Watson had made regional headlines by saying his Legislature coddled pot-smoking immigrants. He later admitted police found “trace evidence” of marijuana but insisted he wasn’t driving under the influence.
