Latest robbery follows Peninsula trend

An armed robbery avoided turning into a bank robbery by a matter of feet on Monday, after a man took a large quantity of money from another man as the victim entered Liberty Bank just before noon.

Police Sgt. Joni Lee said a thin black male, approximately 28 years old, 6 feet tall and 180 pounds, approached a man as he entered the bank at Linden and Lux avenues to make a deposit. The suspect was wearing a short-sleeve white buttoned-up shirt, white pants and a white baseball cap.

The suspect pointed a gun at the man and demanded that he hand over the money the man was carrying. Lee said the robber took "a good amount of money," but did not know a specific amount.

"It does seem odd that they would hit someone walking into the bank, because they may not have had any money," Lee said.

Investigators had not determined how the suspect fled the scene, or in what direction he went after robbing the man. The victim was not injured in the robbery.

Although not a true bank robbery, the incident is the latest in what has become a summer trend for the area. Since June 21, there have been at least eight robberies at Peninsula banks. On Aug. 10, robbery suspect Eric Munoz, 40, was arrested in South San Francisco in connection to robberies in San Mateo and Foster City.

In a separate robbery case, Phillip Guerra, 30, was arrested for an Aug. 7 robbery of a Bank of America in Redwood City. Guerra was arrested in an allegedescape attempt onboard a Caltrain in Belmont. He was found with $3,000 in cash as well as the demand note, prosecutors said.

Lee said the Police Department is still investigating Monday’s robbery and any possible connections to past events. Because the man was robbed going into the bank, Lee said investigators were also considering the possibility that the man had been followed or the suspect had enough prior knowledge to know that the person was depositing cash.
