Landscape artist’s home for sale

Jack Chandler of Chandler & Chandler is a well-known Napa Valley landscape architect whose work has been covered in numerous lifestyle and shelter books and magazines, and who has won awards from trade associations and the San Francisco Garden Show. But he is also a sculptor in steel, and both aspects of his art were used to make the home he’s now selling.

When he bought 4500 Silverado Trail in Calistoga three years ago, it was a flat-roofed ranch house, his daughter and business partner, Jennifer Chandler said. He renovated it, creating custom steel furniture and fixtures, landscaping the 4½-acre yard to take advantage of its existing pond and a seasonal waterfall, and turning a shed into a guesthouse.

"It’s just got so much style. It’s a real statement house. It’s got beautiful hand-applied plaster walls, very high ceilings. Jack is known for his very high steel sculptures, and he’s got steel on the grounds and inside," Morgan Lane Realtor Dotty Hopkins said. "You would think that would make it a very harsh and contemporary property, but it’s not. It feels very European."

Some of the custom furniture may be available to purchase with the home, including a dining table that seats 14 to 16, Jennifer Chandler and Hopkins said.

"It’s great for entertaining," Jennifer Chandler said.

Jack Chandler himself is out of town planning a new vacation home. Among the permanent steel fixtures he designed for the house are a fireplace surround and kitchen counters done with acid etching and powder coating. Another notable fixture is the solid-slab marble sinks in each bathroom imported from Italy, Jennifer Chandler said.

The steel also extends outdoors to a trellis in a grotto area on the property, with seasonal waterfalls. The yard also has terraces and a large swimming pool.
