Labor Day bridge closure may extend to four days

The planned closure of the Bay Bridge over Labor Day weekend may now stretch to four days, Caltrans and Bay Area Council officials announced Tuesday.

Those groups are seeking input from businesses on both sides of the bridge to determine "how badly a four-day closure will [affect] business and which ‘fourth’ day businesses would prefer," according to Bay Area Council Director Jim Wunderman.

Businesses can offer their feedback by visiting www.bayareacouncil.org/bridgeclose.

BELMONT

‘E-waste’ disposal day will be held next month

To help residents dispose of high-tech waste like computer monitors, cell phones, fax machines and printers, the Belmont Public Works Department and ECS Refining are holding an "E-waste" collection day on June 2 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"E-waste" often contains chemicals and heavy metals that can pollute local water supplies and soil if thrown in dumps, so they must be collected, crushed and properly separated for disposal.

There will also be a drop-off spot for batteries and fluorescent light bulb tubes.

The event will be held at the Caltrain parking lot between O’Neill and Ralston avenues. For more information, contact the city’s Public Works Department at (650) 595-7425.

DALY CITY

Seniors have new housing at Hillcrest Gardens building

Seniors in and around Daly City will soon have an affordable option for senior living in the Peninsula’s largest city. Officials broke ground Monday on Hillcrest Gardens, a 40-unit apartment building at Hillcrest and Vendome avenues serving very low-income seniors. Senior housing in Daly City is hard to find, as most complexes have four- to five-year waiting lists, city officials said.
