LA sheriff watchdog says his agency effective

The Los Angeles County sheriff's independent watchdog is defending the agency's monitoring of jailhouse inmate abuse and deputy misconduct.

Some members of the Board of Supervisors have questioned the effectiveness of the county-funded Office of Independent Review, headed by Michael Gennaco, since the FBI began a jailhouse probe last year.

In a confidential report obtained by the Los Angeles Times (( ), Gennaco tells supervisors it was his agency that pushed reluctant sheriff's officials to discipline problem deputies.

Gennaco says the watchdog agency is responsible for thorough and fair outcomes for several hundred probes each year.

Gennaco wouldn't discuss what prompted his report to the board.

Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore says he's unaware of the report.
