LA deputies shoot man after foot chase

A man stopped while riding a bicycle in northern Los Angeles County was shot and killed by sheriff's deputies following a short foot chase.

Sheriff's Lt. Kim Unland says the shooting happened after the bicyclist was pulled over for a traffic violation in Lancaster late Saturday.

Unland says the suspect took off on foot and ignored the deputies' commands to stop.

The deputies said the man reached towards his waistband while they chased him.

Thinking he was armed and fearing for their safety, deputies fired at the suspect, according to the sheriff's officials.

The suspect died at the scene. There's no word yet on whether he had a weapon.

The deceased man's name has been withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The incident is under investigation.
