Kudos: S.F. chowder house takes home prize for creative crab recipe 

Hats — or should we say toques — off to San Francisco’s Blue Mermaid Chowder House for earning honors in the 27th Annual Great Chowder Cook-off, held this summer in Newport, R.I.

The Blue Mermaid, which is located in Fisherman’s Wharf, won in the Most Exotic Chowder category and took home second place for Best Creative Chowder category for its Dungeness crab and corn chowder.

The restaurant’s team was the only West Coast entrant. During competition, more than 150 gallons of Dungeness crab and corn chowder were served.

Chefs competed for first place in four categories — Best Clam, Best Seafood, Most Exotic and Best Creative — and winners were selected by public vote, with some 50,000 people participating.

“We take great pride in our unique chowder, and it was an honor to be involved in this competition,” says executive chef Steven Connolly. “Our goal was to bring a taste of San Francisco to the East Coast by featuring fresh Dungeness crab and sourdough bowls.”
