Kudos: Balboa High School gets grant to urge students to eat healthy

Getting kids of any age to eat their fruits and veggies might be a challenge, but Balboa High School in San Francisco will receive a $21,960 grant from the California Department of Education to expand healthy food choices at the school.

Balboa is one of 25 schools across California to receive grants totaling $184,100, according to the CDE, which has been handing out similar grants under its Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program since 2002.

Under these grants, the foods are meant to supplement schools’ regular breakfast and lunch programs.

“Kids need to eat nutritious food and be physically active because these are factors that help them succeed academically,” said Jack O’Connell, superintendent of public instruction for California.
