Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl set for New Year’s Eve kickoff

The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl landed a New Year’s Eve date for San Francisco’s 10th annual bowl game and will feature a Pac-12 Conference team against Army, provided the Cadets win six or more games.

Kickoff for the nationally televised ESPN contest is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 31, bowl executive director Gary Cavalli announced. The game will be played at AT&T Park.

“We’re thrilled that our 2011 game will be held on a Saturday, the traditional day for college football, and on New Year’s Eve, when interest in the bowl season is peaking,” Cavalli said. “This game date will provide an excellent showcase for our teams and give fans an opportunity to come to San Francisco for the holiday weekend.”

In January, the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl featured a single-loss Nevada team against Boston College.

The Wolf Pack prevailed 20-13 in front of 41,063 spectators. The turnout marked the fourth time the game has sold out in the past five years; the lone non-sellout coming in 2007 when AT&T Park was filled to 92 percent of football capacity.

The game has been a financial boon to The City. According to figures released by the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau, the game and weeklong events surrounding it have generated in excess of $100 million in direct economic benefit to greater San Francisco.

The game has also been a TV ratings winner.  Over the past five years, the bowl has consistently been one of the highest-rated games on ESPN. — Staff report
