  • A San Francisco police department officer reportedly shot a knife-wielding man in the Portola neighborhood this afternoon.

A man shot by a San Francisco Police Department officer following an altercation in the Portola neighborhood Wednesday afternoon has died, a police spokesman said.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Emergency crews had initially responded to a stabbing at 629 Bacon Street, around 3:55 p.m., Fire Department spokeswoman Lt. Mindy Talmadge said.

According Police Lt. Troy Dangerfield, officers entered the home where the suspect in the stabbing allegedly still held a knife in his hand. Police asked the man to put down the knife, but instead he allegedly came toward the officers who then opened fire.

The person who originally reported the stabbing was treated for non-life threatening injuries, according to police.
