KBH head-fake: I'm staying!

It's crucial to America that I remain in the Senate   (ap photo)

Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison announced in 2009 that she would give up her Senate seat sometime later that same year to devote herself full-time to running for governor. But oops -- she lost a tough primary battle to Gov. Rick Perry, and rather than give him the pleasure of naming an interim successor, Hutchison has decided to serve out the last two years of her term, instead.

Hutchison explained her decision Friday in an open letter to the people of Texas, and at a San Antonio presser. From the DMN:

"My experience will be better used fighting this effort of a president and a Congress to do so much that is really taking away the essence of America," Hutchison said.

As a practical matter, there aren't any real consequences for Hutchison, since she seems pretty much done with politics. The Morning News reports that most of the candidates for her seat are just going to hang out until 2012.
