On the town

Author appearance: Award-winning author Simon Van Booy talks about "The Illusion of Separateness," his new novel. [7:30 p.m., Booksmith, 1644 Haight St., S.F.]

A great hike

Tahoe trekking: Right next to Lake Tahoe, Desolation Wilderness brims with beautiful lakes for quick overnight backpacking trips. One of the least visited is Half Moon Lake, just off a main trail under a granite cirque where rock walls rise 1,300 feet above the shore. It's an utterly dramatic and serene location to pitch your tent. Access comes via a 5.5-mile (one-way) hike that ascends 1,500 feet, and it's worth every step!
