Japantown wants its city planner back

A handful of Japantown residents visited City Hall today to ask the Planning Department to reappoint a part-time city planner to a long-running project that’s designed to reinvent their neighborhood.

The department recently reassigned a part-time planner from the project to work on other tasks, according to Planning Director John Rahaim.

The planner will be moved back to the Japantown project after residents and leaders have spent more time reviewing the latest plans for their neighborhood, according to Rahaim.

Rahaim said budgetary constraints were not a factor in the decision to redeploy the planner and he said a department official will return to Japantown tasks when the time is right, but he couldn’t say when that might be.

“In the interim, we’re still going to devote some time to [the Japantown Better Neighborhoods Plan],” Rahaim said. “Discussions have been very positive – we’ll work it out.”
