Jack White, Stephen Colbert team up with the Black Belles

Jack White is nothing if not completely unpredictable.

Break up his beloved White Stripes? Check.

Oversee recordings with Conan O’Brien? Check.

Have a good-natured “divorce party” with his soon-to-be-ex-missus, supermodel Karen Elson? Check.

But to find out his latest creative plot twist, tune into Stephen Colbert’s “Colbert Report” tonight on Comedy Central, for part three of a zany “Rock Odyssey” the two have filmed as part of the comedian’s weeklong “Dr. Pepper Presents StePhest ColbChella ’011 — Rock You Like A Thirst-Icane.”

At his Nashville-based Third Man Records, White will be producing an actual single for Colbert, who’s determined for the song to top the charts.

The twist?

The band White is using for backup, a great new all-girl combo he’s signed called the Black Belles, who all wear black sheath dresses, shadow-sinister witch hats, and can best be described as Gothic Garage.

On their first two singles for Third Man, “What Can I Do?” and a trashy sendup of the Knickerbockers’ “Lies” — they rock like nobody’s business, and a teaser clip of tonight’s program shows Colbert dressing accordingly, in Addams Family ebony and white face powder.

Fronted by singer Olivia Jean, the wicked little quartet formed in 2009, and soon found killer song placement via horror-flick queen Elvira, who’s adopted “What Can I Do?” as the theme song of her new “Movie Macabre” series. And leave it to the eternally-inventive businessman White to debut his spooky protégées in the grandest way possible, backing Stephen Colbert.

Definitely one of the bands to watch this year.
