Is Newsom reappointment safe?

On Thursday, the Board of Supervisors Rules Committee will hold a hearing on whether to accept Mayor Gavin Newsom’s reappointments to the Small Business Commission.

Among those up for a hearing, is Luke O’Brien. O’Brien, however, is probably not one of the most welcomed faces among progressive supervisors.

O’Brien is a member of a recently formed group known as the Coalition for Responsible Growth, which works to put moderates in office and pushes other causes that tend to be more pro-development.

Back in 2008 the Examiner reported: “CRG are preparing for an all-out attack with other like minded groups and now is our time to be counted,” the chairman of the organization, John Keogan, said to group members in a letter obtained by The Examiner. Keogan asks members for their support in “taking S.F. on a sharp turn to the right.”

O’Brien is also a founding member of the Murphy and O’Brien Real Estate Investments, and prior to that he was the general manager of Pattani Construction, a local development company.

For the appointment to be reject, however, it would take eight votes by the full board.
