Inmates illegally collect unemployment checks

As many as 135 Wisconsin jail inmates were found to be illegally collecting monthly unemployment payments.

An audit by the state’s Department of Workforce Development uncovered $325,416 in fraudulent payments to prisoners during the past six months.

A workforce official explained, "The typical scenario for inmate fraud is the spouse, the girlfriend, the mom, [are] actually reporting for that claimant."
