Inmate dies in San Francisco jail cell

A 50-year-old inmate died while in custody at the Hall of Justice jail Friday, the result of a medical condition, the Sheriff’s Department said.

The man suddenly collapsed while in a holding tank, said department spokeswoman Eileen Hirst. She said medical personnel responded "immediately" but the inmate died.

Hirst said there were no apparent signs of foul play and there was no indication that the death was a suicide. Witnesses in the jail mentioned that the man had complained of not feeling well earlier in the evening, she said. The death occurred just before 10:30 p.m.

The identity of the inmate had not been released by Monday evening pending notification of next of kin.

This is the third San Francisco jail death this year of an inmate in custody, according to Dr. Joe Goldenson, director of jail health services.

Darryl McPherson, 48, died in custody Nov. 25 at the same Hall of Justice jail. Hirst said the death was also the result of a medical condition, and it is currently under investigation.
