India still lets infant girls die from neglect

What: India’s latest census showed 914 girls under age 6 for every 1,000 boys — a trend that continues declining and is widely recognized as being caused by sheer neglect of female infants in many homes.

Why: Some Indians apparently favor sons because of the enormous expense of dowries for marrying off girls. Sons are also believed to be better for taking care of parents in their old age.

How: Hospitals in India often include special wards for malnourished younger girls who are brought in by relatives without any specific explanations of how the children became nearly starved to death.
