Incentives for seismic upgrades gains support

Even if it won’t do enough, we have to do something and do it now.

That was the sentiment of the Building Inspection Commission today when it supported Mayor Gavin Newsom’s plan to offer incentives to property owners to seismically retrofit soft-story buildings.

A report from the city controller said Newsom’s legislation would not do much to get property owners to volunteer for the expensive retrofits.

However, Newsom is working on another plan to make the retrofits mandatory, and that will likely take some time.

In the meantime, DBI commissioners figured that even if only 30 property owners take advantage of the voluntary plan, it’s something. And we might as well get the ball rolling because the clock is ticking, they said.

The voluntary soft-story legislation now heads to the Board of Supervisors.
