Illegal tobacco sales rose in 2009

Sales of cigarettes and other tobacco products to minors rose last year in San Francisco, according Public Health Department Director Mitch Katz.

The uptick between 2008 and 2009 was minimal, from 11.3 to 13.12 percent.

“Overall, we’ve seen a huge decrease in illegal sales to minors,” Katz said. “We were at 22.3 percent in 2004, and we’re at 13 percent now.”
