HUD gives San Francisco $1 million to house veterans

U.S. Housing and Urban Development has granted $1 million to help build housing for senior veterans in San Francisco, Mayor Ed Lee announced Tuesday.

The Veterans Commons housing project at 150 Otis St. will provide permanent housing and social services to 75 chronically homeless veterans. Other financial backers include the Corporation for Supportive Housing, the Mayor’s Office of Housing, the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency and the Federal Home Loan Bank’s Affordable Housing Program.

The project broke ground in November and is scheduled to open in January 2013.
