Howard the penguin is turning 2

The first penguin that was born in the California Academy of Sciences' temporary facility on Howard Street is turning 2 years old in January.

Howard, named after the street, was born on January 11, 2007, and according to the Academy has exceptional jumping ability and teases other penguins by running back and forth behind the rockwork in the exhibit.

In 2003, the nonprofit’s doors closed in Golden Gate Park because of damage from the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. It temporarily moved to 875 Howard St. while the new facility in the park was being built.

Howard hangs around several other penguins that all have their own description on the academy’s Web site and can be found here.
