House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey is retiring.

The Wisconsin Democrat is facing a tough re-election challenge, though his seat is listed in the relatively safe “likely Democrat” column of the non-partisan Cook Political Report. Look to see that rating change more in favor of the GOP now that Obey is dropping out.

Obey is expected to make an announcement at 1 p.m.

Here’s a statement from the National Republican Congressional Committee’s Ken Spain:

“There is no question that David Obey was facing the race of his life and that is why it is understandable that the architect of President Obama’s failed stimulus plan has decided to call it quits. It is ironic that a congressman who became infamously known for his short temper and angry tirades on the House floor, is going out with such a whimper.”
