Hotel blast: Unauthorized gas line killed five at Mexican resort

WHAT: Mexican prosecutors filed charges against five employees and contractors at a Cancun beach hotel where an explosion killed five Canadian tourists and two Mexicans. Investigators found an unauthorized and poorly constructed extension of a gas line under the demolished lounge.

HOW: The floor of the Grand Riviera Princess Hotel was basically rammed through the ceiling by the force of the explosion, blowing out windows in the process. People in the area were thrown across the courtyard.

WHY: Charges against the five defendants include homicide, causing injuries, and professional or technical misconduct. Before discovering the faulty gas line, officials had earlier blamed an accumulation of swamp or sewage gas.
