Homeless man assaulted by chain-wielding man over missing lighter

A homeless man was assaulted by another man with a metal chain in Potrero Hill early Monday morning, police said.

The 65-year-old man was cleaning up his camp site at Utah and Alameda streets underneath the freeway about 6:45 a.m. when another man, who appeared to be in his 30s, accused the victim of taking his lighter, police said.

He then struck the victim over the head with a metal chain and fled.

The victim was hospitalized, but his injuries were not life-threatening.
