Homeless man arrested in the killing of another homeless man in the Mission

A homeless man was arrested in connection with the death of another homeless man at an encampment underneath a freeway overpass Monday, Officer Grace Gatpandan said.

Cesar Castellanos, 36, was booked into County Jail on a homicide charge, Gatpandan said.

Police arrived at Potrero Avenue and Cesar Chavez Street in the Mission district about 6:30 a.m. Monday on a well-being check and found the victim unresponsive, Gatpandan said.

Paramedics arrived and pronounced the man dead.

The Medical Examiner’s Office and homicide detectives determined the cause of death was a homicide and began interviewing people at the scene.

Police said the victim was killed some time between 5 and 6 a.m.

The cause of death is unknown at this time and the victim’s identity is being withheld pending family notification, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office.

The victim’s death marks the 45th homicide in San Francisco this year. At the end of last year, there were 48 homicides.
