Holiday Angels: Patricia Scott

The Examiner celebrates people who made a difference in 2006

Occupation: Executive Director of the Booker T. Washington Community Center

Residence: San Francisco

What she does: Since becoming executive director of Booker T. Washington Community Center two years ago, Scott has helped revitalize the moribund organization, taking great measures to restore the dilapidated building complex in Western Addition while opening up new partnerships with other nonprofit organizations.

Why she does it: A lifelong patron of Booker T. Washington, Scott noticed something was amiss in the organization about two years ago. Along with cleaning up corruption, Scott also helped literally clean the center. "We had to take 10 truckloads of junk out of here," said Scott. "It was real rundown and dirty."

The impact: "The kids really enjoy being here again," said Scott. "We have a diverse, multicultural environment, so they are constantly learning about each others’ backgrounds, which is very important to them. Through our youth we are trying to build a legacy for this community."
