Holiday Angels: Carlo Simonetti

The Examiner celebrates people who made a difference in 2006

Occupation: Retired high-rise window cleaner

Residence: Burlingame

What he does: Simonetti, 71, spends a week before the mid-July Bike for Breath fundraiser ride marking the 62-mile course, much of which is done on bicycle, as it is on the restricted Bay Trail. He is involved year-round in mapping changes to the course. On the day of the ride, he starts work at 5 a.m., helping deliver the rest-stop supplies and remove them afterward.

Why he does it: "I used to race bicycles before I came here from Italy in the 1950s," Simonetti said. "But at that time there were no serious bicycle activities in the U.S. So I put my bike away for 20 years until the sport started getting popular here. I love being able to help people by doing things I enjoy so much anyway."

The impact: Simonetti was Breathe California’s 2006 Volunteer of the Year. "For 15 years, Carlo’s hard work, reliability and dedication have made him instrumental in the success of the annual Bike for Breath benefit ride," said Linda Civitello-Joy, the BC’s Golden Gate Chapter president, CEO.
