Hi Dive owner hosting fundraiser to fight leukemia, lymphoma

John Caine, the owner of Hi Dive at Pier 28½, has been nominated for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s 2011 Man and Woman of the Year campaign. He is hosting a fundraiser at Hi Dive from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Tickets are $35.

Why did you accept the nomination? What is your goal? The timing was right, as a close family friend just passed away from cancer. My goal is to reach $25,000. My main goal is to help improve the day-to-day quality of life of cancer patients. Donations can be made at gsf.mwoy.llsevent.org/johnc.

Tell me about the fundraiser. It’s my major attempt at raising funds. Donors will get a free drink and appetizers donated by Hi Dive. There will be a silent auction and a [Fire Department] fireboat water show at 7 p.m. We are incorporating Red’s Java House next door. They are sponsoring a live band on their patio and we’re linking both restaurants with an outdoor area that will be the prime spot for the water show.

What has your experience been like so far? It’s been more personally rewarding than I could have imagined.
