Harding Park greens fees rising across the board

For the first time in four years, Harding Park Golf Course — The City’s most expensive links and home to the 2009 Presidents Cup — is on the verge of hiking its greens fees.

There would be a $15 increase for nonresidents — making it $150 on weekdays and $170 on weekends — and a 2.9 percent increase for residents, which is about $1.30 since the resident price is about $46, according to Recreation and Park Department documents.

The resident greens fee is nearly twice as much as The City’s other public golf courses, including Lincoln Park Golf Course and Sharp Park Golf Course in Pacifica, where it costs $23.

San Francisco Public Golf Alliance member Michael Ippolito said he has been hitting the links for 35 years and agrees with increasing the resident greens fees because they aren’t significant, but he disagrees with the nonresident hike.

“That’s way too high for nonresidents,” said Ippolito, who added that Harding is his favorite course. “There are too many other courses in the Bay Area and that price is just out of market. We want to attract more players.”

In 2002 and ’03, Harding Park’s 18-hole layout underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation to bring it up to PGA Tour standards. October’s Presidents Cup, which brought golf stars such as Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson to The City, was estimated to be an $80 million gain for The City through hotel revenue and other sources.

Rec and Park documents indicate that if the fee increase at Harding Park were to have started in mid-April, it would have netted nearly $25,000 in additional revenue between then and June 30.

The ordinance has been approved by the Recreation and Park Commission and is scheduled to be presented to the Board of Supervisors Budget and Finance Committee next week. Ultimately, it must be approved by the Board of Supervisors.
