Handout: Beginning of the end for wasteful ethanol subsidy

WHAT: The Senate voted 73-27 to cut billions of dollars in subsidies for the profitable U.S. ethanol industry, scoring the first victory against the powerful corn-state lobby.

WHY IT’S WASTEFUL: Ethanol processing consumes more energy and produces more pollution than it saves. It raises corn-food prices and depends on federal mandates.

NO VICTORY YET: The vote may be meaningless. The White House is against full repeal of ethanol subsidies, and this subsidy cut is attached to a bill not expected to become law.
