Groups to hold protest award show to tech-themed celebration

Community groups who see the technology industry as their source of frustration for housing and rent troubles in San Francisco are planning their own event to challenge a tech-themed celebration.

In response to local tech groups holding the seventh annual Crunchie Awards, several community groups will host The Crappies: The Truth in Tech Awards at 7 p.m. today at the Davies Symphony Hall, 201 Van Ness Ave. The Crunchie Awards are scheduled to take place at 7:30 p.m. at the same location.

While the Crunchie Awards celebrate the best in technology, organizers say The Crappies will honor the tech companies and leaders who have "exacerbated disparities in San Francisco." Among the groups scheduled to participate are Jobs with Justice, SEIU United Service Workers West, Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment and South of Market Community Action Network.

Event supporters say they will ask leaders in the tech industry to live up to their side of the bargain on community benefit agreements.

"A rising tide of wealth in San Francisco was supposed to lift all boats," community leader Gordon Mar said. "But it hasn't. Instead it feels like tech companies are deliberately sinking our boats as they jam their yachts into the harbor we've called home for decades."
