Green-thumbed thief busted for bagging bushes

A man was caught green-handed robbing plants and trees from city property Thursday, police said.

Two San Francisco cops patrolling the 200 block of Melrose Avenue, near the Sunnyside Recreation Center, spotted the man walking with two large garbage bags full of large plants and small trees at around 7:50 a.m., according to officials at Ingleside Station.

One of the cops had known that newly planted plants and trees had recently been stolen from city parks in the area.

After questioning, “the suspect ultimately confessed that he had, in fact, removed some of the plants from the nearby park and others from the Glen Park area,” police said.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident and booked for the theft at Ingleside Station, police said.

San Francisco parks have seen their share of vandals. In April, a half dozen saplings were stolen at Doughboy Meadow in Golden Gate Park. Last summer in GGP, 32 rose plants were cut.
