Golden Gate Park soccer field debate to go before the public

All of the people who were not elated about building a synthetic soccer field with brighter lights in Golden Gate Park can officially document their issues next week.

The long-awaited scoping session on the impacts of building the Beach Chalet soccer fields at the western edge of the urban backyard is scheduled for Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the senior center at Fulton Street and 37th Avenue.

After a tumultuous debate about whether the runoff will harm the animals, the lights confuse the birds and several other questions about whether the turf is appropriate, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department made the decision to perform an Environmental Impact Review.

The EIR is costing Rec and Park about $407,000 and the draft might be ready by the end of the year.
