In honor of the San Francisco Symphony’s 100th season, The Examiner is showcasing contributors to the orchestra’s distinguished history.

David Herbert, timpani

The orchestra’s principal timpani, who holds the Marcia & John Goldman Chair, is a leader in cutting-edge solo timpani repertoire, with  many commissions and world-premiere performances to his credit.  Starting with Michael Tilson Thomas’ New World Symphony in Miami, Herbert went on to the Pittsburgh and St. Louis orchestras. He has appeared as a soloist with San Francisco, Shanghai  and New World symphonies, and the National Repertory Orchestra. He is a faculty member of the San Francisco and Boston conservatories, and an instructor at the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan.
