Gladys Porter Zoo announces birth of gorilla

An endangered Western lowland gorilla born at a South Texas zoo has met some of the family.

Officials with the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville on Tuesday allowed the infant, born Jan. 15, to join other creatures at the Gorilla Island exhibit.

Zoo officials say the mother, named Martha, and baby spent their first days separate from the group to ensure a close bond.

Authorities believe the baby is male, but are not sure because the mother has kept the newborn close. Authorities hope to name the baby once its gender is confirmed.

Zoo spokesman Jerry Stones says Martha is a good mother, nurturing babies before she started having five of her own. The father is a silverback gorilla named Moja.
