Gascon seeks to recruit outside help

Legislation that would allow San Francisco's new police chief to appoint people from outside The City's police department to command staff positions will go before the Public Safety Committee Monday.

It  would amend a city code that states “appointments to the command staff may only be made from the rank of rank of lieutenant or higher in the San Francisco Police Department.”

The proposed amendment would also allow Police Chief George Gascón to promote from the department’s lower ranks.

The legislation would require approval by the full Board of Supervisors.
