Gascon seeking common ground on “sit-lie”

While Police Chief George Gascon has been beating the drum for a “sit-lie” ordinance for weeks, it appears he is now warming to the idea of compromise.

He met last week with Coalition on Homelessness Executive Director Jennifer Friedenbach, and asked her for suggestions on how to deal with what Haight Street residents are calling an increase in thugs loafing about on the sidewalks.

Friedenbach told The Examiner that she is searching for ways to avoid a new ordinance.

“They already have, whatever it is, 27 different ordinances on the books to harass the homeless,” Friedenbach said.

Gascon expects a work plan from her on Friday, the same day he meets with Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, who recently called for a hearing on the proposal.

“I’m willing to try to come up with some solutions where we can work together,” Gascon said Thursday. “I’m not backing off on a sit-lie ordinance; I’m just willing to hear what they had to say.”
