Gascón meets with de la Plaza’s family

The parents of Hugues de la Plaza, along with their attorney, are turning to the FBI for help in the case of their son’s mysterious death.

François and Mireille de la Plaza met Friday with San Francisco police Chief George Gascón and Deputy Chief of Investigations David Shinn, according to Melissa Nix, de la Plaza’s former girlfriend. San Francisco police Sgt. Willfred Williams also confirmed last week’s meeting.

The de la Plazas requested Gascón put a new investigator on their son’s case -- something the chief said he would consider after the Los Angeles Police Department finishes its review of the case, according to Nix. Williams said he couldn’t comment on the matter.

The couple then met with the local office of the FBI. An agent assured them he would make sure his office reviewed the case, according to Nix.

De la Plaza, who held dual citizenship in the U.S. and France, was found stabbed to death in his Hayes Valley apartment June 2, 2007. Police have suggested he committed suicide, while his parents and French officials believe he was murdered. His cause of death has been labeled “undetermined” by the San Francisco Medical Examiner.
