Garage-door opener leads to theft suspect

It was a real open-and-shut case.

Police arrested a man suspected of multiple burglaries in Potrero Hill on Friday after he unknowingly opened and closed a garage door while police were investigating the scene, police said.

Police responded to the 400 block of Connecticut Street about 3:40 a.m. after a resident called 911 about an unknown man walking out of a neighbor’s garage.

When police arrived, the garage door was still open. During the course of their investigation, the garage door began to open and close seemingly on its own.

Police then noticed a car parked nearby with foggy windows. Inside they found a man ducking down in the front passenger’s seat trying to avoid detection. When he was removed from the car, police discovered that he had been sitting on the garage door opener.

After he was detained, it was found that the car he was hiding in also was stolen. Police discovered numerous items from the garage inside the car. Police said items from at least eight other car burglaries that night also were in the back seat of the car.
