Gap tops Bay Area stocks 

San Francisco-based Gap Inc. (GPS) jumped more than 5.3 percent by the close of the markets Thursday, the largest move seen among local stocks tracked by the Examiner. Lam Research Corp. (LRCX) also rose more than 4.3 percent.

On the down side, San Jose-based SunPower Corp. (SPWR) fell more than 3.8 percent, and San Francisco-based McKesson Inc. (MCK) more than 1.6 percent.

The markets closed on an up note, with the Dow Jones up more than 1.3 percent, the Nasdaq up more than 1.6 percent and the S&P 500 up more than 1.5 percent.

Companies in the news included National Semiconductor Corp. (NSM), which reported second quarter sales were up from the last quarter but down from the same quarter last year.
